The display needs for the passenger information system

Taking the train today is quite different from decades ago, with many aspects streamlined by smartphones, such as purchasing tickets through apps like Omio, which eliminates the need for printed paper.


However, there are still aspects of train travel that require real-time, on-site actions, such as finding the correct platform, determining which train to board, and waiting for the right train.


In the past, we relied on signs and staff assistance to help passengers, which was sufficient during times when passenger numbers were lower. Today, one of the busiest train stations in Germany, for example, handles 300,000 passenger entries per day, with over 20 routes and nearly 200 trains operating on those routes daily.


The sheer number of passengers and trains necessitates real-time information for those needing to catch their train. This requirement could mean hiring more staff or digitalizing the passenger information system, which means LCD or LED.


Whether using LED or LCD displays, the primary purpose is to help passengers find the correct location to board their train. The advantage of LCD is that its higher resolution can provide better image quality, which is crucial for conveying information clearly. LCDs can offer this level of detail at a comparable cost, making them an effective solution for displaying real-time train information.

One of our 37-inch passenger information displays is designed to be simple yet highly informative. The screen displays a range of details including the route map, platform/carriage positions, locations of canteens and pet cars, and even information about the railway company, complete with their logo.


All this information can be clearly presented on a general resolution LCD with 1920x540 pixels over an area of 0.22 square meters. This level of detail would be challenging for an LED display of the same size, and micro-LED technology, which could meet these requirements, remains too expensive at present.


Another advantage of LCDs is their lower power consumption, which is ideal for the internal environment of train carriages. They provide stop information and help passengers avoid alighting at the wrong station.


In summary, our 37-inch LCD display offers a cost-effective solution for clear and detailed passenger information in train stations and carriages, with the added benefit of energy efficiency and suitability for real-time information systems.
