In most cities, taxis typically have distinctive paint schemes that set them apart from regular cars. However, these paint schemes are not always easy to recognize at night. To address this, taxis are often equipped with a lightbox on the roof, which makes them more conspicuous in the dark. The lightbox on top of the taxi also serves as an advertising platform.

By displaying advertisements for other businesses, it helps reduce the cost of taxi. At first, taxi used the light box with print advertisings, then someone introduced the LED display to replace the traditional lightbox, offering a much more flexible way to show content. The status of the taxi (e.g., available or occupied) can also be displayed on the LED screen if necessary.

However, the main drawback of LED displays is their resolution limitation. Even a lightbox with printed plastic can offer better resolution than an LED screen, which can limit the effectiveness of advertisements, especially those featuring images.

This is a serious problem, because the advertisement here usually for the passengers, when they getting on or off the taxi, they will read the content in very closed distance and the low resolution of the LED will give worse read experience.

Using high-brightness outdoor LCD signage on the roof of taxis is a solution that addresses all these issues. It can display images and videos at a higher resolution; Of course, the LCD signage on the top of the taxi can use in the daylight with clearly content, its 2500-nits high brightness can do this with no doubt.

This LCD solution also consider about to adapt this special using environment—on the top of the taxi is not the general outdoor environment, the taxi is keep moving in high speed which means the air resistance and fixed problem should be noticed; also, the weather issues will keep effect the LCD signage with no gaps—we know taxi is keep moving unlike the fixed digital signage nearby the street.

To address all those problems, RisingStar offer the solution with IP66 waterproof for this device, the 37 LCD panel we use are the wide temperature Hi-tni LCD panel, the maximum surface temperature can reach 110℃ for a while, make sure the LCD is keep working under scorching sunlight.

Also, due to the taxi is keep moving which gives us an idea to turn the disadvantage to advantage, that the special air duct design can use the wind make by the moving to cooling the LCD panel, with the original fans cooling system to make sure the temperature is keep in an acceptable range to the LCD panel.

Display engineering, thermal design & technical documentation — Shenzhen, China

The RisingStar Engineering Team is the technical core behind every display we ship. Based at our 4,000 m² ISO 9001-certified facility in Shenzhen — home to a Class 10,000 cleanroom — our engineers have specialised in high-brightness, sunlight-readable LCD technology since 2009, covering optical design, thermal management, structural sealing and system integration.

Working directly with Tier-1 panel partners including LG Display, AUO, INNOLUX, BOE and Tianma, the team tunes luminance from 500 to 5,000 nits, engineers IP65/IP66 enclosures, and validates 24/7 performance across a -20°C to 70°C operating range with a service life of up to 50,000 hours. Every unit leaves the line under 100% factory inspection — from 7" panels and open-frame modules to 100" outdoor totems and ultra-wide stretch bars.

Our engineers also write and review the articles published here. Instead of paraphrasing marketing material, they draw on hands-on deployment experience in outdoor advertising, retail window displays, EV charging, transportation PIDS, food processing and industrial HMI — so specifiers and integrators can choose hardware on verified figures.
